There will one hour’s 50-metre Long Course training at Stockport between 5:30pm-6:30-pm at Stockport Grand Central Pools on Saturday 19th July. All senior and Intermediate swimmers are invited to attend.

Long Course training is an important experience for all swimmers at the club and we would urge everybody to take the opportunity avail themselves of this chance. It also brings all of our Senior and Intermediate swimmers together. There is an opportunity to make an occasion out of this day as well. Right by Stockport’s pool are several entertainment and dining establishments, which our swimmers and their parents can use either before or after the training session.

The cost of the session will be £5 per swimmer and the address for the pool is…

Grand Central Sq
Wellington Road South,
Stockport,
SK1 3TA

The Saturday morning session at Jubilee Pool (7:00-9:00am) will take place as usual, though the Saturday afternoon session at Sneyd Pool (3:15-5:15pm) is cancelled!

Chase and Stafford Apex Gala Entry Forms 16 July 2008

For those swimmers wishing to enter the Chase (15th/26th Oct) and Stafford Apex (6th/7th Dec) Galas could they please return their entry forms to either Tracey or Sarah no later than Monday evening!

It is increasingly becoming the case that galas are filling up many months in advance and we need to submit our applications early to avoid disappointment.

Those swimmers who do not return their forms by Monday evening, but who still wish to swim in either or both of these galas, will have to submit their own entries individually.

The ASA Championships 13 July 2008

The ASA Open Championships at Liverpool's new 50-metre pool at Wavertree took place over the weekend, with Rachael Kelly (14) representing Newcastle ASC.

Rachael had qualifying times for both the 50 an 100 Butterfly events but did not return from holiday in time to compete in the 100. However, she more than made amends in the 50 Fly as she recorded a fantastic new PB and established herself as one of the top twenty 50-metre Butterfly swimmers in the UK.

Her time of 28.83 (against a previous PB of 29.33) saw Rachael finish in 14th position overall, though she was by far the highest place swimmer below the age of 17. Rachael's time was also a mere 1.17 seconds behind the winner, 28 year-old Ann-Karin Kammerling of Sweden!

Well done to Rachael and here's hoping for similar success in the National Youth Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield at the end of the month!

Staffs League - Round Two 07 July 2008

Despite again fielding a squad that was half a dozen swimmers below being full strength Newcastle ASC secured their second successive victory in this season’s Staffs League. The win was secured off the back of 30 victories from the 44 races on the night with 19 individual wins and 11 relay successes.

For the girls, Sophie Trussell (17) was successful in both Open Fly and Freestyle, Lesley Dawson (15) won the 14/15 Fly and Backstroke races and Phoebe Vyse (13) brought home wins in the 12/13 Breaststroke and Backstroke events. Double victories by the boys came from Alex Gough (14) in the 14/15 Breaststroke and Backstroke, while Jack Smith (12) came home first in the Backstroke and Freestyle races.

The other girls individual wins came from Charlotte Holmes (17) in the Open Backstroke, Sophie Elsby (17) in the Open Breaststroke, Courtney Pickstone (15) in the 14/15 Freestyle and a splendid effort from Robyn Davies (13) who swam up in the 14/15 race but still recorded a fine win. A special mention to Megan Ashley (12) who was second in both the Girls 12/13 Freestyle and Butterfly races.

Dave Henshall pulled off a great win in the Open Fly for the boys, Alex Dawson (16) was victorious in the Open Free, Josh Ellis (15) swam to the win in the 14/15 Fly, Sam Williams (13) won the 12/13 Butterfly and Ashley Tweats (11) came home first in the 10/11 Backstroke. Alexander Dawson and Josh Ellis also added second place finishes for the team in their other individual races, while Ashley Tweats was denied a second win after being DQ’ed in the 10/11 Freestyle.

On the night Newcastle won eight of the ten relay events and added both Cannon events for good measure too. Rebecca Twardochleb (8), Meg Whalley (9), James Malam (9) and Ewan Giles (9) won their 9/U Medley event, while Hannah Williams (8), Rebecca Twardochleb, Aaron Nash (9) and Ewan Giles also brought home the 9/U Freestyle Medley.

Maisie Whalley (11), Aimee Brown (11), Ashley Tweats (11) and James Hoskins (10) won the 10/11 Freestyle relay, while Paige Nutton (11), Aimee Brown, Sean Kavanagh (11) and Ashley Tweats brought home the Medley win for the team.

In the 12/13 age group, Phoebe Vyse (13), Megan Ashley (12), Sam Williams (13) and Jack Smith (12) won both the Freestyle and Medley races.

Both the 14/14 Relays were also won, with Lesley Dawson (15), Courtney Pickstone (15) Josh Ellis (15) and Alex Gough (14) winning the Medley, and Courtney Pickstone (15), Jade Leese (15), Josh Ellis (15) and Alex Gough winning the Freestyle event.
The Open age group saw us claim a very close second in the Medley relay but then go one better in the Freestyle race to see the team of Sophie Trussell (17), Fran Henshall (17), Alex Dawson (16) and Joe Stanford (16) come home in style.

On a night of so many victories it was great to see the team make both a winning start and finish to the gala. The boys team of Aaron Nash, James Malam , Sean Kavanagh , James Hoskins, Jack Smith, Sam Williams, Josh Ellis, Alex Gough, Joe Stanford and Alexander Dawson kicked things off with a great victory in the Boys Cannon, while the team of Meg Whalley, Hannah Williams, Maisie Whalley, Paige Nutton, Megan Ashley, Phoebe Vyse, Jade Leese, Lesley Dawson, Fran Henshall and Charlotte Holmes finished things off with a powerful win in the Girls cannon.

There were many fine performances on the evening, especially from our very youngest swimmers. Everybody played their part in the victory and it extremely pleasing to report that every single swimmer in the Newcastle team either secured an individual win or else was involved in a successful relay team. Well done to everybody!

We have one more round to participate in, on 4th October, and then hopefully the final itself on 22nd November.

Final Results:
Newcastle ASC.... 225
Cosacss............ 211
Dove Valley........ 145
Burntwood......... 145
Lichfield............ 141
